Reticular Activation System and How to Marry a Guy from America

One of the most important systems in your brain, that either allows you to achieve what you want or to fail at it is called Reticular Activation System.

I’ll explain it to you.

We receive through our senses, mainly eyes and ears, tons of information every second, but before it gets to our consciousness, it gets prescreened by the Reticular Activation System (RAS). Most of the information gets dropped off and only a little part would be allowed to go through and we will become aware of it.

I’ll give you this example.

You come out of the mall and you can’t remember where you parked your yellow Lamborghini.  You start looking around, by literally turning your head left and right and moving through the parking lot in all kinds of directions. At some point you find your baby, get inside and drive off. The task of locating your vehicle is completed.

What was happening in your brain during it and how were you able to locate your car?

You weren’t aware of it, but your brain sent a signal to the RAS requesting to locate a yellow Lamborghini and provided a mental picture of it. Your RAS started screening all the information arriving through your eyes about every vehicle near you and trying to find a match for the mental image of a yellow Lambo. 

When it happened, it sent you a signal “The vehicle has been located!” and you became aware of it.

Now, here is the beauty of this story: If I were to ask you how many gray Toyota Camrys were in the parking lot (that area where you were looking for you car) you are not going to be able to tell me.

Not because you didn’t see them, but because your RAS did not allow this information through to your awareness.

Your eyes did see every vehicle around you, but your brain did not receive any information about it.

Do you remember the Terminator? When he went to a bar all naked looking for some clothes.

You could see on his “screen” how he was scanning the dimensions of each patron in the room looking for a person with the same measurements and his RAS was telling him “too small”, “too big”, “inappropriate” - that’s how our brain works.

That’s the system that helps us to find a friend in a crowd, to wake up when a child crying in the next room, but sleep through much louder noises of trucks driving buy and helicopters landing in front of the house.

Another story.

Here is this lady, friend of our family, back in Russia, dreaming for a few years to marry a guy from America.

When I asked her “Why?” she said “Two of my girlfriends married guys from America and they are very happy!”

I thought to myself “That’s a great reasoning, it’s just I know different stories, when the same scenario went terribly wrong or at list not as successfully.”

I told her about cases, where it wasn’t exactly a good decision on the side of those other girls, about that Russian girl, who got killed here and about other stories that I knew.

Now, pay attention, she had two successful stories and I gave her, I think, about four or five unsuccessful ones.

She said, whatever.

In a while I talked to here again, the conversation went again to her idea to marry a guy from America and again I asked her about her reasoning. She said, that she has two successful stories about two girlfriends who blah, blah, blah…

What happened to my arguments?

Her RAS did not allow her to retain my unsuccessful stories, they did not match what she was looking for, therefore my stories got disposed of as just some noise. If I gave her some instances that would support her version - she would obviously remember them, because they would match the ideal story she is looking for.

I’m pretty sure you can find a lot of examples in your own life to see how your RAS works.

Here is a question, though: how do we use this knowledge about our brain in order to succeed in business?

Here is how.

In order to be able to materialize our ideas and dreams, we need first to create a compelling vision about our goals and about what we wont to achieve in our business. This vision has to be precise and detailed, because this vision is going to be the yellow Lamborghini we are going to ask our RAS to locate on the parking lot called “Life.”

I’m not talking about some magic, but rather about re-calibrating our brain in order to be able to see all the opportunities, that we normally don’t even notice around us, all those people, who we could utilize, but we don’t know that they are around us, all those new ideas, that are in front of us, but we can’t see them, because we are to busy telling ourselves “I’m not good at business, there is too much competition around, I’m out of ideas, 98% of new businesses are normally fall apart within the first two years…”

All those arguments are supporting the idea of us failing.

Success starts from us sending a clear vision of our business and our achievements to the prescreening center of our brain called Reticular Activation System.

If you believe in yourself, if you know exactly what you are looking for, if the only future you see for yourself is success - that’s what your RAS will find for you in your reality and present to you in a way that will feel like magic!

You will be amazed of all the opportunities and people around that are going to help you in one way or another, it will feel like a dream come true, like everything is finally falling into place, but it will not be a miracle, it will be your brain in action.

You create your success, by letting your powerful brain know that success is the only outcome you are looking for and that’s what you will be presented with!

Are There Still Customers During Recession or Global Resorts Network Is Dying?

There are two major groups of people that you are going to be marketing to:

1. Retail customers who's main interest is a discount on travel and
2. People interested in the business opportunity attached to the product.

That's logical to predict a decline in the amount of customers from the first group due to the current situation with the economy, but at the same time it would be as logical to expect people to become more open to the idea of savings offered by GRN.

I think travel is a very unique merchandise, merchandise may be not as important as, say, food or gas, but something right after them in line.

Travel is not just a way to burn extra money, no. The entire concept is built around the idea of exposing your group (mainly - family) to a number of rapidly changing conditions and situations that leads to a bonding affect and allows you to rediscover the closeness of members of the group.

Ask your girlfriend or wife if she enjoys going to the grocery store with you and she will tell you that it's like a date for her. Imagine how happy would she be if she would get to go to a vacation with you and how much closer you will become after spending a few days together 24 hours a day. She will remember about every detail of this trip for years! And you will too!

I still remember how we went first time to the Black Sea with my family in 1980, when I was a yang boy and our dad was still with us and the good times that we had together. And it was almost 30 years ago!

I think that travel is the Ultimate Reword that we give to ourselves. New car will become just a vehicle after the first week after you bought it, expensive watch will become just a time-measuring device, jewelry will devaluate in a week, but the memories that you will get from your trips will be a source of positive emotions and feelings for you forever!

I don't remember all the jewelry I bought for my wife over the years , but I do remember every trip we took with her, the monkey crossing the road in the jungle right in front of our car, how she was attacked by some fishes in the ocean and I had to drag her out of the water, how we went to a very expensive restaurant and were served some crappy food that we couldn't even finish, all those little details that mean something only for us.

So, yes, there might be a decline in the amount of customers, but, ultimately, people will always travel and spend money on travel no matter how slow the economy is.

As far as people attracted to the business opportunity - obviously, there is plenty of them all the time and especially right now, when employment does not guaranty any stability any longer and after reading "Reach Dad, Poor Dad" everybody and his brother wants to become his own boss.

It’s a “Get Rich Quick Scheme!”

First of all, obviously, I agree, that on the Internet right now a lot of promises of impressive amounts of money in impressively short amounts of time are rather questionable.

The problem is that we tend to simplify everything by just slapping this "It's a get rich quick scheme" label on any new opportunity that promises more than what we are earning right now.

It just shows that we've been conditioned to believe that becoming wealthy has to be hard, that normal situation is that you have to spend about 40 hours per week working in order to barely break even, barely make enough money to cover all your expenses. We define ourselves by what line of work we are in, because by default we think that we have to work full time. Not enjoy what ever we like doing, not traveling, not helping somebody, not spending time with friends or family, but work. What we like we can do in our "spare time", time that we have left after spending the entire day working!

It just indicates that we willingly reduced our productivity to the level where our full time work generates only barely enough money for us to get by, we would actually feel weird if the amount of money that is required to cover our monthly expenses could be achieved within just a few ours each month. We wouldn't know what to do with all this "free" time, we would feel like we are doing something wrong and "wasting" time instead of dedicating it to hard work.

What does it actually mean, "Get rich quick"? What is the dollar value of this "rich"-thing and how quick is this "quick"-thing in order for us to be suspicious?

For somebody who is making $12,000.00 per year anything above $12,000.00 in less than 12 month will, probably, fall into the "get rich quick" category. It will be completely different for somebody who is making $12,000.00 per month.

I spent a few years "flipping" houses and the fastest and easiest "flip" took me about a month and generated about $20,000.00. If I approached anybody from the same street before I purchased the house and told them that I can show them how to make easy $20,000.00 within a couple of month, how many of them would want to deal with me? Or, how many of them would tell me that it's a "get rich quick" scheme? Would "all of them" be the correct answer?

How many people would qualify $20,000.00 in a month as a "get rich quick?"

There is nothing wrong with increasing ones earnings and efficiency! That should be the goal, actually. That's why we left in the past individual self-sufficiency and attempted to become professionals in particular fields.

Again, I do not deny the existence of the "get rich quick scheme", but we should, probably, employ more sophisticated tools to evaluate new business opportunities than just a worn out slap-on label.

“Honest, Modest Living”

I thought it was our Russian thing implanted by communists, that wealth is some how associated with dishonesty, but apparently it's a world-wide disease.

There is nothing wrong, or dishonest, or bad, or somehow negative with being wealthy! It's just another excuse we have in our arsenal to justify failure!

"I'm not rich, but at list nobody can say that I'm not an honest man!"

 What a load of crap!

We spent decades back home being poor and justifying it by being honest, before Gorbochev said "Go ahead, make money, start your own businesses and achieve your financial dreams" and everybody woke up and realized that one can be at the same time wealthy and still be an honest person!

That those two things aren't even related anyhow!

How about this: in Africa hundreds and thousands of people die every year because of the malaria. One mosquito net could be purchased for less then $10 and it will save at list one person from literally dieing! If one has an opportunity to earn extra $100,000.00 and purchase 10,000 mosquito nets and therefore to prevent 10,000 people from dieing, but instead he or she is too busy trying to justify not doing anything about it, too busy being scared to invest in the wrong company or opportunity, while knowing well that somebody is dieing right now and could be saved but not going to be, isn't this actually dishonest?

Pretending that Africa is just a made-up country from a children's book - is this honest? It's just one of the problems in the world that could be cured with money.

Let's stop looking for excuses to fail and start making money and making a difference in the world!

“It’s Too Good To Be True!”

We stopped questioning long time ago that our lives have to be hard, skies - cloudy, opportunities - unattractive, beautiful women - they will never be attracted to us, expensive cars - I will never be able to afford one, house on the beach - it's probably too hot there either way, donating a million dollars to a charity - what am I, a Rockefeller?

We actually think that the phrase "too good to be true" justifies not pursuing something that we want! Isn't it disgusting?!

I think somebody has to break the cycle and change the situation! Otherwise our kids will grow with the same mentality and the same will happen with our grand-kids!

I'm from a little town in Siberia originally, but now live in California, run three businesses and am married to a hot Latin woman. All of these things fall under "too good to be true" category and I could've easily use this phrase to justify not achieving any of them, but, where would I have been by now? That's right, in Siberia, pushing snow!

We should be worried about things being too bad, not the other way around, wouldn’t you agree?

Never Give Up

"Never give up your dream!" - that's what Chuck Norris said in one of his interviews about 15 years ago. I'm pretty sure every famous person repeated the same phrase in one way or another, but people rarely understand what "never" really means.

The way I take it, "never" means "never-ever-ever-ever-in a million years!" It can never happen! You can not find out what would happen if you gave up your dream! This option does not exist!

We like quoting this kind of phrases, yet, having failed once or twice, changing our attitude into failure-justifying mode and we start crying about the economy not being right, or somebody being at fault, or particular business to not work, or some other external reason of our failure.

The most disgusting thing is that we tend to adjust our behavior accordingly and make wrong conclusions out of our failures. We think "I failed at this thing, therefore I have to stop doing it", when the lesson should be "I made a mistake, from which I will learn and continue trying."

There is this friend of mine who we participated in a few businesses together throughout my college years. We are still in touch, just geographically we are a half of a planet apart. So at some point when I was upside down with one of my business projects and it felt like I'm about to quit, I called him and asked, if there was a point at which an entrepreneur should admit that he just wasn't born to be successful and get a 9 to 5 job and just stop trying.

He didn't hesitate for a second and said: "That's an easy question! Never! We will never quit! We just don't do it! No matter what kind of results we are getting, we will never ever quit! If it takes us a lifetime to learn - we will spend our lives learning, but we will never quit! This is what we are - entrepreneurs! No matter how many times we will fail, we will never stop trying!"

How about that?

First Page Of Google Using BackPage and CraigsList

Are you utilizing such tools like BackPage and CraigsList in your business in order to get to the first page of Google and generate traffic to your website? Turns out it’s still a new idea for a lot of marketers out there and I’m going to try to shed some light on this subject.

CraigsList has a Google Page Rank of 8, which is very high. BackPage is right behind the CraigsList in popularity. Naturally, a back link from BackPage is going to add a lot of value to your website as far as the quality of the back links (unfortunately, CraigsList is “no follow” any more).

Another great thing is that based on the Google Page Rank your ad in either one of those  locations will get indexed in a matter of minutes and will pop up on the first (hopefully) page of Google organically in a matter of hours.

Remember: it’s not about getting traffic from the visitors of the CraigsList or BackPage, but about getting to the first page of Google and getting visitors from Google.

Obviously, both of those guys have pretty strict rules,  but it’s just a matter of phrasing your ads accordingly in order not to get flagged right away.

It’s all about the keywords you use. You can change the copy any way you want in order to comply with the requirements of either site, just make sure you use your keywords correctly.

So, in order for your ad to get to the first page of Google you need to follow this concept:

1.  Place your keyword in the title of the post
2. Make sure you have your keywords in the body of the post
3. Insert your URL in the ad and make sure it’s clickable: http://www.URL.com, not just URL.com
4. Use long tail keywords to insure first page of Google placement of your post. General criteria is that the niche has to have about 300000 search results or less, but according to my tests you should be able to get to the first page even within niches of up to a few millions search results. That’s how much Google loves those two websites.
5. That’s it, you are done.

From the automation stand point BackPage is much more convenient to use, because it allows you to schedule re-submitting your adds for you automatically.

With both of those sites you need to make sure that you do not spam and therefore you shouldn’t repeat the same submission more than twice a week, I would even recommend to do it only once a week in order not to irritate nobody.

When your post gets to the first page of Google it will stay there for a few days, so once a week re-submission should be just as good.
